Just a couple of decades ago, you could learn something new and be done. You know it today and, therefore, you will know it tomorrow as well. But this is not the case anymore. Our world, our technology, our lives are changing at a pace like never before. We are constantly faced with new updates, new challenges and new ideas. We have become a global society where everyone with an opinion has the ability to create their own content and make it heard. While all of this can definitely make our heads spin, cause us frustration and even make us angry, the solution to feeling at peace once again is actually counter-intuitive.
First, we should understand that this pace, these changes, are not going to slow down. In fact, as technology gets faster and more efficient, it is likely to speed up. Trying to tell ourselves, “as soon as things slow down, I’ll be okay,” only sets us up for more frustration and anger. Instead, facing the truth that this faster pace and constant change is simply the new standard, will help tremendously. It doesn’t mean we have to like it, but there is some comfort in accepting reality.
Second, we need to embrace continuous learning and take initiative to continue that growth. “When we decide to be lifelong learners, our brains start looking at the world differently. We look at everything with more curiosity.” We seek more to understand. When we stay in a place of embracing growth, constant updates, challenges and new ideas seem less negative and may even start to spark our curiosity more.
A great place to start moving into this space is to find groups and organizations that align with our values and goals which push us to new spaces and out of our comfort zone. Getting involved with others helps open conversations and brings further opportunities to see things differently. When we engage with others where the goal is growth and meaningful purpose, we start to see changes as opportunities to learn. We become lifelong learners who are able to find peace, even excitement, in the new.
